Barbara Barry Dining Chairs

When Barbara Barry introduced her comely Oval X-Back dining chair for Baker in 1998, it became an instant classic. "That piece came out of a certain naïveté that I have tried to hold on to ever since I was a young designer," says the California native. "Back then, I allowed myself to create exactly what I saw in my mind's eye."
Fast-forward to 2011 when Barry, following an eight-year sabbatical from the furniture company, rejoined Baker. Their renewed partnership is the kind of homecoming most designers would kill for.
"Baker really let me be myself without dictates or restrictions," Barry says of the new collection, a handful of her classics in fresh finishes, along with a 62-piece line of original and superchic case goods, upholstery, lighting, mirrors, and tabletop items.
Seduced by the creative freedom, Barry brought low-luster lacquers, white onyx, limestone, shagreen, gold and silver leaf, and bronzed glass into the mix. While typical of custom work, those materials are unusual at retail. But Barry enjoys a rare distinction in the furniture world: She's got name recognition. Rachel Kohler, a group president at Kohler, Baker's parent company, compares Barry's perfectionism to that of a professional athlete. "It's a thing of beauty—her energy, her passion, her focus on nuance and detail, her pushing of boundaries; Barbara injects adrenaline into the design process."
Perhaps that was the goal of Barry's Folie mirror, an homage to Cocteau's La Belle et La Bête. At more than four feet high and three feet wide, the oval mirror is framed in a ring of meringuelike, cast-resin peaks that suggests a pastry chef gone wild with a piping bag. In fact, the French seem to have been on the designer's mind with this new collection. "I love the Oval X-Back chair in linen lacquer with the X in gold leaf. It's as if it took a little trip to Versailles," she says with a laugh.
